Selected from "Folk Hymns of America" (edited by American composer and folklorist, Annabel Morris Buchanan), Three Appalachian Hymns were commissioned by Jason Crafton, trumpet professor at Virginia Tech. These settings feature valuable challenges for intermediate trumpet players including range, technical, and ensemble challenges with the piano. The set begins with an imitation of church bells surrounding the first tune in its original form. “Davis,” the hymn tune on which the second movement is based, is originally in a major key; Annabel Buchanan enjoyed the Dorian mode, however, so her collection features this tune in that minor-sounding mode. Each movement gradually increases in difficulty and dissonance until the last movement ends with a fiery deconstruction of the third tune. The set was premiered on the New Works recital at the 2025 International Guild of Trumpets conference by Jason Crafton and Rick Masters (piano).
